Definition Essays

Students picked a mundane inanimate object to define. While Ike expanded to a persuasive and narrative form of definition, other students creatively described this object in unusual ways.

The Situation

The situation at the North Pole has entered a dire state of emergency. Santa has been giving thousands of presents per year but never receiving income from them. Thus he loses magic creating them. But now he needs to be modern and just use money to save the North Pole. This system has been set to fail from the very start of Santa Clauses, and now we must react. The elf approval rating of Santa has set record highs at ninety percent. Elves always need to be kept happy or you won’t get any presents no matter what. We can’t let this Santa slip away from us because this will most likely never happen again; an after running it through our database you have a better chance of winning the lottery fifty days in a row. Santa Claus needs to get money because he will lose all his magic, causing him to die, for its appearance, and to boost his image.

Santa needs to be quickly brought up to speed on the history of commerce. Long, long ago when there was no money, not even coins people would have to barter. Bartering is when you give someone an object for an object, basically a trade. Then people decide they didn’t like that way, it was too hard to have equal trades so they invented the coins. It started out where certain metal discs were worth however much their weight was worth. I’m not going to bore you with the details of the evolution of coins for they changed very much and many financial laws were created. China invented the first note more commonly called the bill or cash. This was more simple than having to weigh coins and easier to keep. Checks also came into existence, where you could write on a piece of paper however much the price was in one piece of paper instead of many bills, very snazzy. Also pieces of plastic were invented, more commonly known as debit and credit cards. A debit card automatically takes the money out of your account which holds all your money for your debit card. While a credit card makes purchases but you just have to pay at the end of the month, which is so convenient. Also during Santa’s busy months of November and December he won’t have to pay that much or none at all! All that will happen is Santa will get a certain percent of the money added to your total left, a teensy weensy percentage, which is definitely worth it!

Once Santa gets this money I know Santa will be dying to know more about it. First the sound, the sound is just delightful like a flawless musical performance. When snapped it back and forth it makes a nice, satisfying whipping sound. Rubbing it back and forth creates just music to your ears, there’s no other way to describe it. It makes you feel like a king. The look of it just puts delight in any eyes its grass green color combined with sandy tan is just a masterpiece. The feel of money is silk, so smooth and lush you have to adore the feel. Never can it be compared with those nasty, metal coins. Also if Santa wants to feel hip, he can say the other cool words for money. Like moolah, dough, Franklins, bucks, big ones, green, and many more. Santa will always be the coolest at the North Pole if he says these. Oh the size, it’s so perfect thinner than paper, lighter than air, and fits perfectly into any hand, no strain at all its all comfort. Where can this money be used though? The answer is simple, everywhere there’s not any single place money or a handy piece of plastic can’t or won’t be taken.

Santa will use this money to purchase shiny iPads, iPods, Xboxes, and other fancy gadgets and toys without wasting your magic power. This will keep Santa alive, elves will work happier, and all will be great in the North Pole. This is all based off our plan our plan for greatness. It’s the best of both worlds, we all win. This is how it will all work. We will be Santa’s bank, marketer, and friend. Together, we can keep the North Pole in tip top shape, but only with this plan. Now every parent will pay Santa anywhere from one hundred or more dollars. Then with that money Santa’s elves will buy stuff based off their wish list and how much money they give you. Now Santa will finally be modernized and also can earn some dough, moolah, etc. The parents will jump on this, they don’t have to buy presents, wait in those nasty lines. Parents will beg Santa to take their hard earned cash. Also the kids will love it; they are a pretty big part of the picture. They’ll love their flashy presents. This is the stuff right here, a once in a lifetime offer that will fix everything. Making an almost perfect north pole and make it even better.

We have run hundreds of simulations and each one makes Santa a billionaire giving him more money to buy cool gifts. With that much money you can buy cool cars, a heated pool, and anything you want. So this is what we’ll do, since Santa hasn’t ever had a credit card we will put one billion on his credit card, with only a thirty percent interest rate on his loan. As hard as this is for us to do we know you need money and we’ll be happy to start you up! Santa has been forced to go from a magical charity that made kids happy. Changing into a capitalist company buying presents for kids to make them happy. Even though this is depressing, bear with it for it will make all of our lives better and easier.

Watches

Is a watch some fancy gadget that looks nice on your wrist with no purpose? They come in many different sizes, shapes, colors, and types. Also those moving hands must serve a purpose.

A masquerade of gaudy rings and bracelets looks at you as if begging you to take them with you. Then the necklaces and earrings that do not seem to notice you as you walk past. Finally the humble watches sit in their glass case, hands always moving steadily, not to fast not to slow, keeping time to get you to that meeting on time. Once you enter into a sporting goods store and go past the tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks, suddenly you run across a rowdy tangle of sport watches. Rough and tough is what they are. They look up at you each seeming to tell you its benefits. Their faces protected by bars of metal.

In the jewelry store, in the sport store all the watches cry out their virtues. “I am water resistant up to twenty feet,” says one. Another says, “Take me to a party you will be complemented on my good looks.”

“No, No,” cries another, “Look at my numbers instead of hands and my buttons; I am most definitely the watch for you.”

The last question is what kind watch will you get? It may be analog or digital blue or green. It may have many features or just one or two. The choice is yours, chose carefully.

Ever wonder what cars are thinking? Probably not. That’s because most cars are really good at hiding their feelings. There is one car however that, if you closely enough, you can tell exactly what it’s thinking.

This car is the mini-van. It resents the humans for the whale like body they bestowed upon it. They have even begun to refer to each other as Land Whales and grumble and mumble together as often as possible.

At stoplights, as they wait for the light to turn green, the mini-vans complain about all the injustices the humans have inflicted upon them. They say,” Why don’t the humans carry us around for a change?” They think it is terribly unfair.

They especially despise humans with young offspring. Small children are forever spilling things on the poor mini-vans’ precious carpet. Then the parents don’t even bother to clean up the mess!

In fact, the mini-van has had its last straw, it will not put up with anymore from these inconsiderate humans. They plot their escape even as we speak. So whenever your mini-van refuses to start or the door gets stuck, you know that’s your Land Whale’s subtle way of saying,” No more!”

COFFEE SOUNDS

WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING, WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY HEAR: COFFEE BREWING, DOG BARKING, AND YAWNING? YOU NORMALLY HEAR COFFEE BREWING THE SIZZLE OF IT FINISHING, THE POP NOISE OF IT COMING OUT OF THE MACHINE INTO THE CUP, THE CLINKING SOUND WHEN TWO MUGS HIT IN CELEBRATION, OR THE SIPPING OF ONE PERSON GETTING CLOSE TO THE HOT COFFEE UPON THEIR LIPS. THE SLURPING OF ONE PERSON SLOWLY TASTING IT. THE SOUND AND SMELL OF FRESH HOT COFFEE IS A LOT TO SAY.

FRESH BEANS SMELL SO GOOD, LIKE STRONG VANILLA. YOU GRIND UP THE COFFEE BEANS UNTIL IT’S REALLY FINE LIKE DUST. YOU STICK IT IN THE MACHINE AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUSH A BUTTON. IT STARTS. YOU HEAR IT SLOWLY FILLING THE CUP. IT’S LIKE THE SOUND OF WATER FALLING SLOWLY, GETTING INTO THAT ROUND MUG.

AS YOU BEGIN TO SUCK IT UP WITH ONE BIG GULP, IT MAKES A STRANGE SOUND LIKE A GLUG. THE LITTLE SIPS ARE LIKE A KISSING SOUND. ANOTHER COFFEE SOUND WOULD BE WHEN YOU SLAM THE MUG DOWN AND HEAR SWISH, SWISH, AND SWISH.

MAYBE YOU HEAR THE DROPPING OF SUGAR INTO THE COFFEE: DUMP, DUMP. THE SPOON STIRRING THE CREAM AND SUGAR: SCREECH, SCRIRCH, AND SCRAP. AND MAYBE THE SOUND OF IT GOING TOO HIGH AND SPILLING ON THE FLOOR. SLISH, SPLAT, SPLASH.

THESE ARE THE MANY SOUNDS OF COFFEE.

Group Editorial on the Tenth Avenue North Concert

Before the upcoming concert and after class many students either went to the dorm or the library to get their homework out of the way. Others paced the pavement or the green grass too excited to do homework. Everybody was filled with anticipation or dread at the coming performance.

Mr. Landry sent some boys to pick up twenty pizzas for dinner. Despite the excitement the campers consumed nineteen of the twenty pizzas.

At 6:30 pm, it was time to line up outside of the auditorium. Some students played a round of Ninja, falling in the grass and hiding in bushes. After what seemed ages, the doors were opened. Students went to the merchandize stand to buy t-shirts, cds, stickers, and sweatshirts. Then we filed into the auditorium. The camp gave us $15 off of everything we bought. As we found our seats I noticed the overhead lights put a tinge of blue on everything. Finally the concert started…

Screaming and shouting for Tenth Avenue North fills the room as they walk out onto the illuminated stage in Evans Auditorium. Camp Refugee, the Landry Camp, local churches, and parents all fix their eyes intently boring holes through the band. The Christian band started off the concert with a bang, literally.

Eardrums nearly burst as the sound echoed off the walls in the small auditorium. Many hands raised, eyes closed as inspirational lyrics flew through the air. As the lyrics filled the ears, they entered the brain touching the heart and soul. Rivers of tears swam down a few faces. Thundering applause shook the room after short speeches and songs. A tornado or applause, whistling, and shouting swept through the room as the chant of, “Encore! Encore!,” brought smiles to Tenth Avenue North’s sweaty faces as they left the stage. Excitement and thought followed everyone as they left their seats, accompanied by a twinge of sadness that it was over.

After the concert, my ears were in pain, but I still wanted the playing to continue. I was extremely excited to meet these amazing guys up close and in person. I waited patiently as they prepared to meet the fans. When they were ready, they scattered all over the room, signing autographs, packing their gear, and mingling with us fans.

I decided to approach Jason first, because I had a pair of drumsticks that needed to be signed. As I approached Jason, an elderly woman about the age of sixty, with a Tenth Avenue North CD in hand, stared me straight in the eye. A cloud of confusion encompassed my head that soon cleared after a brief moment of thought; I, apparently, have an uncanny resemblance with the lead guitarist, Jeff. I said to the lady: "I'm not in the band, sorry." She hastily apologized and left, avoiding any more embarrassment.

After approaching all the members of the band, and hanging out for a while, I headed back to the dorm and reflected on what had happened that day. It was an amazing day, full of fun and excitement-probably the highest point of my week.

(an outside perspective)

9:30 p.m., the concert is over, people are heading back to the dorm. Everyone is excited but especially the girls. They run screaming up the three flights of stairs and burst onto the hallway causing havoc.

Choosing to spend the evening with my family who were in town, I had not been at the concert. I was peacefully minding my own business when, as I attempted to finish my homework, a bunch of crazy-eyed girls burst into my room and jumped on my bed. The impact caused me to fall and bang into the desk. I’m too young to die! I thought as I got back up and watched horrified as my poor phone was picked up and tossed out the window.

It has finally happened, I thought as I descended the stairs to retrieve my phone, They’ve finally lost it. When I got back to my room a girl had grabbed a towel and was using it as a cape, as she ran up and down the halls. Startled I snuck past her and went to my room; I had a feeling I wasn’t going to get much sleep that night.

What should one make of this? It may not always be possible to tap the mysteries of the teenage psyche but I’m pretty confident a good time was had by all and some students were touched to the core.

Sidewalk Figures of Speech

On Wednesday afternoon, when students were getting a little sleepy, we took our figures of speech to the streets. Students had to create a new metaphor or simile using the topic of their Definition Essays and an object or experience from nature.

Did you know it was Comma Awareness Month?!

After reviewing a few common grammar mistakes in class today and subsequently practicing correct usage by playing games online, we realized it was Comma Awareness Month!

Eats, Shoots & Leaves is not only a great book but also a fun website! Click here for their comma practice game.

In case you're interested in basic apostrophe practice, here's another game.

Starting the days with prayer and C.S. Lewis

We've begun class each day with one of the prayers you see below from the Book of Common Prayer and a chapter of C. S. Lewis's "Mere Christianity." Lewis's unflinching defense of Christianity to a secular world is a particularly relevant text in today's postmodern and tolerance-turned-to-acceptance society, not to mention a prime example of cogent writing!

For Education

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom: Enlighten by thy
Holy Spirit those who teach and those who learn, that,
rejoicing in the knowledge of thy truth, they may worship
you and serve you from generation to generation; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee
and the same Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

For Knowledge of God's Creation

Almighty and everlasting God, you made the universe with
all its marvelous order, its atoms, worlds, and galaxies, and
the infinite complexity of living creatures: Grant that, as we
probe the mysteries of your creation, we may come to know
you more truly, and more surely fulfill our role in your
eternal purpose; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Schools and Colleges

O Eternal God, bless all schools, colleges, and universities
[and especially Landry Academy], that they may be lively centers for
sound learning, new discovery, and the pursuit of wisdom;
and grant that those who teach and those who learn may find
you to be the source of all truth; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.

Storied Beginnings:Plot Diagrams used for Short Story Brainstorming

Poems from the First Brainstorm

Students showed up this morning with excellent first drafts of free verse poetry based (mostly) on the previous brainstormed list of observations. We spent the morning "workshopping" their work. I think you'll agree the results are excellent!

As I walk through the doorway, I notice a domino of smiles waiting to be tipped over.
When they finally notice me, their smiles roll down like a red carpet welcoming me.
My cup of doubts soon shattered as their little smiles turned into geeky grins.

After signing in, I take a seat at the side of the room.
Avoiding all small talk, I silently observe
the people as they converse
I began to notice a pattern. A technique of observation, a technique observed from observation.

Why do people smile?
What makes people smile?
What does it take for someone to smile?

Is depth of a smile is more than just an indicator of happiness?
No, it is also a measure of comfort and certainty.
Certainly, everyone can smile.
But certainty will determine a simple smile or a cheesy grin.

Oh, the power of a smile. Its simplistic depth so wonderful. Beautiful, refined, divine.
Its uncertain depth can float you out of doubt.
The awe of its power can fill you with indefinite doubt or absolute certainty.

Whispering Storm
As the day ends dark blue paints the
sky. As the darkness deepens the air takes
on the heavy smell of oncoming rain.

Wind rustles the trees which seem to
come to life and whisper to one another
about the day

The wind brings tidings of a storm.
A clap of thunder silences the trees'
whispering in an instant.

Rain plinks on the aged brick path
and burrows into the ground to feed the
ever-thirsty trees.

A flash of lightning reveals the
serene scene.

The heavy rain slows to a gentle
drizzle to make way for the wind as it rustles
the trees which seem to come alive and
whisper to one another about the day.

From under cascading chocolate curls, eyes shining

Blue as bellflowers

Roses brush her cheeks gently, leaving their blush behind

She smiles and extends a pearl white delicately gloved hand

She smoothes her gown

The sea green satin falls around her

It is like a waterfall that fades into foams of lace at her feet.

A man standing straight and tall returns her affectionate smile and offers his black clad arm

Her flowered kid slippers peak out from under her petticoats as she sinks into a deep curtsy

She accepts his arm and they sway

Slowly

Dreamily

Out into the night.

THE DREAM OF MY CHILDHOOD.

If I could see the ocean and the mountains from my window sill,

oh what joy it would bring just to see it once more.

Before I go and leave this earth,

Waves white calmly come to the shore,

the sea gulls crying, and the sand orange.

The star as bright like the moon.

I just look up to the night sky and i see a mountain lifting it up high.

The ocean blue and clear,

with the clouds moving with the waves.

To see it in my dreams.

And to know that it is here.

Maybe before I leave and go I just might visit there.

The mountaintops and the ocean bright and fair,

The wild flowers upon that mountaintop and the blue wind cold as ice.

To see it with my own two eyes

Would let me know what heaven is almost like.

Still in my childhood room and thinking of everything I have not seen.

To see my dream once more is all I’ll ever ask.

The Swagger of a Swan

Swans, ducks, and geese, all gather together

In their own world, undisturbed

They splish and they splash

They waddle and they rest

They swim and they dive

They eat and they bicker

But what’s the difference between them all?

Is it the blinding orange beaks?

The strong, mighty feet?

The magnificent white feathers?

Or the mighty call?

But what you really notice is the swan

He’s elegant

Stands strong and straight

His snow white feathers

Shine with brightness

Magnificent in beauty

A silky gloss covers his body

As soft as a brand new satin blanket

With his chest out as if he knows he’s superior

Everything they do they keep their head up with pride

A swan stands out like color

In a world void of color

Our First Activity

Hours after arriving on campus, I asked students to take at least 30 minutes to brainstorm a list of observations, focusing on sensory detail. Check back soon for some of the fantastic poetry that these observations became! Here is a list of just some of their brainstorming (unedited as brainstorming should be):

The green leaves outside the classroom window reminds me I’m in the middle of a vast expansive unknown stretch of beautiful mountains, hills flowing with nature.

You could differentiate the students from the teachers just by their smiles.

The pebble path made a delightful crunching sound as I trod upon it.

The smell was old like an old school building.

A dark blue sky spreads across the horizon engulfing the campus in a beautiful but eerie color.

I entered the science building, smells of formaldehyde diffused into my nostrils as it ignited neurons shooting towards my brain, triggering feelings of nostalgia.

The old hallway told of many comings and goings.

I can hear the doors creak and clinging sound of their nametags.

The wind blows tickling the trees.

I can hear the crickets out talking at night and I can see the green leaves from the window.

As the night gave way, the newly risen sun seemed to shout for joy at the prospect of a new day.

Swans ducks and ducklings splished and splashed waddled and swam fished and rested, ate and dove, living in their own world undisturbed.

Fresh faces arrived alongside the coming crisp summer rain.

Perched on a three-story tall ladder, the view was overwhelming. Beautiful green colors came flying at you.

There was a washed clean smell in the night air as we walked along the path.

The unmistakable scent of pizza, music, and tons of different conversations sift through the air fighting to be noticed.

I was in my room, it was hot, my face was red like a cherry.

Cobblestones, rocks, bricks, all combine together, to create a rustic landscape, bringing you back decades.

The sparse trees shadows cut fantastic shapes on the newly cut grass.

The pizza was here was not the best but if you’re hungry it tastes the best.

One small campus trapped surrounded by the lush green mountains, imprisoning the campus in its beauty.
